Tamil language is the oldest of all languages of the world. Similarly Tamil Isai also had its origin more than 2000 years ago. There is a mention about yaazh in the ancient Tamil grammar Tholkappiyam and other Tamil Literature Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal and Palai.
It will not be an exaggerated panegyric to state that Silapathigaram is the treasure of Isai and many aspects of Isai and dance are found in it. Adiyarkunallar and Aarumbathanar who interpreted Silapathigaram had contributed a lot to Tamil Isai and Dance.
The fact remains intact that panns are present in the religious literary works namely Thevaram and Thiruvasagam composed by Thirugnanasambanthar, Thirunavookarasar, Sundarar and Manickavasagar during seventh, eighth and nineth centuries and also by Karaikkal Ammaiyar during the third Century. Pursuant to the research already undertaken in Pann, the recent methods adopted in Pann research are categorically and critically analysed by the well experienced and efficient scholars in music and Oduwars on the dates 22, 23, 24 and 25 in the month of December every year right from the year 1949.
There is a mention about 11991 Panns in Silapathigaram and 103 Panns in Thavaram and 23 panns in Divyaprabhandum. The main objective of the conference on Pann research is to compare these Panns with the Panns (ragams) of the modern-day songs.
The proceedings of the research conference would be recorded and a comprehensive report is prepared on the outcome of the conference every year and the same would be circulated among all the participants in the research conference.
Panns were researched during the conferences conducted so far and subsequently a conclusion was arrived at out of comparison of the Panns with the tunes of the modern ragas as detailed below.
